Students are now heading back to school for the fall semester. Local and state officials start warning them about the consequences involved when they buy fake ID.
Not only can the underage student be charged criminally for owning a fake ID, they can also have a higher risk of becoming a victim of identity theft.
A website can gather personal information to produce many fake IDs. According to Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs to 7 Eyewitness News, “You really are rolling the dice if you put your name and invest on buying fake IDs.”
Governor Andrew Cuomo Issues a Warning:
The Governor released a caution to college students returning to school for the fall semester that when they buy fake ID, it is not only illegal but can enhance possibilities of being a victim of identity theft. In recent years, detectives from the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York have found many instances of underage license holders turning to be victims of identity fraud after they bought fake identification online from overseas websites.
The rippling effect of identity fraud can last for many years and more college students are exposing themselves to counterfeiters who try to buy fake ID online,” said the governor. “Our message is simple and it’s just not worth it. You get yourself in trouble with the law and expose your financial future at risk.”
The criminals can open new lines of credit, get a job, take money from the bank or retirement accounts, file false tax returns and even seek medical attention. They can just use the victim’s personal details such as their name, social security number, address and date of birth. The victim may have a hard time recovering their real identity.
According to survey and studies, 18% of identity theft victims are aged 20 to 29; where 6% of the victims are aged 19 and younger if they buy fake ID. They are the age group who less likely monitor their credit card and bank account activities, pay for identity fraud monitoring services, share information on social media, and make them prone to identity theft than any other age group.
